My son-in-law was in a pretty serious car accident on Thursday. Praise God, he walked away from it only slightly banged up. But the following few hours gave me time to talk to him. Really have a conversation. It was awesome and enlightening.
To say that his formative years weren't ideal is probably a pretty serious understatement, but he emerged from them a caring, responsible young man doing a great job taking care of his young family. Did he have moments during our conversation that he wanted to go down a negative path? Sure. But did he overcome them? Yes.
He helped remind me that we are not our circumstances. We are not our past. We are absolutely who we choose to be through our daily thoughts and actions. I'm thankful for the reminder, and I'm thankful for him. But next time we get the chance to chat, I hope we're just relaxing over a couple beers.
