Darlene here. Was talking to Janet McLaren of Cruise Planners earlier this week, and she just returned from a trip to Bermuda. According to this expert traveler, it was one of the most romantic destinations she's encountered! Sooo, of course, I invited her to share her experience with us.
Just in case you're planning a romantic getaway, here you go! And don't forget to take a book or two! :-)
Romance and Relaxation on a Pink Sand Beach in Bermuda
By Janet McLaren, travel specialist
The path to the beach was paved, but fairly steep, and required cautious attention. After winding down around a huge outcropping of rock eroded from an ancient coral reef that now perched high above the sea, the pavement gave way to soft, powdery sand that slipped into my sandals no matter how carefully I stepped. I marveled at how white and silky it was, faintly disappointed that it wasn’t the bubble-gum hue of my imagination.
Suddenly, the narrow path opened to a vast expanse of beach fringed by glittering turquoise water and frothy waves. Even though the sand did not appear to be pink at all, it was a fine beach, already quite crowded with sunbathers, umbrellas, and colorful spread-out beach towels. Enormous rocks arose from the water in artistic formations, instantly beckoning the cameras!
We headed toward a quieter area, in hopes of snagging a shady spot under one of the rocks. There was a perfect patch of dry, smooth sand that didn’t look like it would be enveloped too soon by either the sun or the tide, so we dropped the beach bag, lay out the towels, and slathered on the sunscreen. The sun was unexpectedly intense for the latitude, but it was a beautiful not-too-hot day.
The water lapping near the base of our rock was very calm and shallow, so I decided to go ahead and take my seawater soaking right away (it’s so good for the skin). The initial chill dissipated quickly and I waded further and further out, turning my back to the gentle waves as they washed into the little cove formed by the eroded reef. And then I gasped as I saw it! The sand really was pink! I suppose having the sun and water behind me erased the glare and altered my perception, and there it was – that fabled, delicate coral blush.
I couldn’t envision a more romantic and enchanting seashore. As I returned to our lucky patch of shade, I saw that Steve had already fished out the wine and the glamorous plastic cups I had stashed in the beach bag, and was deep into the book he had brought. I had a book, too, and after a kiss and toast to our good fortune, I was soon happily engaged in a sweet, romantic story as the ocean breezes wafted over us.
Later, we held hands and walked along the shore looking for seashells, splashing our toes in the pristine surf until it was time to go. I felt as if I had stepped into a scene from a romance novel as we shared another sweet kiss then gathered up the books and the now-empty wine bottle and cups and trudged reluctantly, yet contentedly, back up the path toward the bus stop…
