Well, a spring holiday weekend has come and gone. Winter finally seems to be a thing of the past, and so I'm thinking of sprucing up around the yard and house. But somehow, those thoughts have brought me right back to writing!
So the contractors just arrived to begin a long overdue overhaul of the half bath on the main floor of our house. They’ve only been here about thirty minutes, and already I’m daydreaming about them. It goes something like this: What if . . .? What if they . . . ? How could I . . .? Hmmm. Couple of good-looking guys. Hard working. Problem solvers. Hmmm. What if the homeowner was. . . ? What would happen when . . .?
Now, I have enough story ideas to keep me busy for quite some time. I do not need to start another book. But you never know where and when inspiration will strike. These days I look at ordinary situations in a different light. Everything has potential. What was once just a home improvement project is now possible material for my next novel. Or if not an entire novel, bits and pieces – snippets of conversation, perhaps, or unexpected issues. Maybe there’s a hidden closet or safe or note behind that cabinet that’s being hammered off (haha, I wish!). Could that slab of marble have come from some exotic location that has significant meaning or send a character off on an adventure?
Is there potential for conflict? An ethical dilemma? Who are these guys? Are they working to code or could cheap, shoddy construction lead to danger, a lawsuit, conflict? And of course, there’s the possibility of romance – meeting new people, strangers in someone’s personal space, potential for differences in socio economic status, differences in taste and style, a time crunch and deadlines to meet.
I have to say it’s kind of fun to sit here and brainstorm the possibilities. You just never know . . .
