I'm so excited to share Lacey and Caleb's story with you!! Here's a little excerpt to hopefully whet your appetite:
She removed her sunglasses when she saw him, her eyes shadowed above
the dark smudges that told him she hadn’t slept much better than he had. Caleb
stood, pulling out her chair.
Frowning, she hung her bag over the chair and sat. “I don’t have much
time. I’m –,”
A waitress appeared at the table with small glasses of water. “Coffee?”
she asked as she placed cups down in front of them.
The woman poured then laid two menus on the table. “Let me know when
you’re ready to order.”
As she ambled away, Caleb looked at Lacey. “I know you’re in a hurry. I
take it you haven’t heard anything?”
She looked like she wanted to get up and leave but she took a deep
breath instead. She placed her hands on the table, palms down, and leaned
forward, her eyes flashing fire. “Why are you here?”
Caleb stared at her for a second. He’d been waiting for the salvo since
she walked in. Calmly, he answered. “You know why I’m here. I want to help find
Her hands shook as they tightened into fists. “Really?” she spat. “You
expect me to believe that you just happened to call my dad for the first time in
months the day after he goes missing? That’s an awfully big coincidence. Call me
crazy, but I’m not a big fan of coincidence. And you’re sniffing around his work
like a freaking bloodhound. It’s not adding up, Caleb, at least not in your
Caleb’s eyes bored into Lacey’s. “You need to trust me. I’m here for
the right reasons.”
Lacey snorted. “Trust you? You’re kidding, right? I trusted you when I
knew you and that was a huge mistake. I don’t even know you now. Why the hell
would I trust you?”
Caleb ignored the barb. He had a ridiculous urge to come around the
table and yank her into his arms. The pain and fear radiating from her were
living breathing things. She needed an ally. She needed him. She just didn’t
know it yet.
By the rapid rise and fall of her chest as she challenged him, he
figured she was seconds away from walking out the door. He only had one weapon
in his arsenal. He hoped it was enough.
He captured her cold hands is his warm ones. “You need to trust me
because your dad did,” he said quietly.
Dangerous Ally, coming January 3, 2013!!
