Today is the first day of school for kids in my area. And it’s August 12th!!! I find that absolutely appalling! August 12 – not even the end of summer. Not even the middle of August! What the heck? I really wish I understood why the people who set these schedules want to start the school year earlier and earlier.
I don’t get it. What’s wrong with a little more summer?! I love summer. I love giving kids the opportunity to get out and do some different things in environments other than the classroom. Jobs, sports clinics, summer camps, family vacation, etc. These experiences are just as important as the learning that happens in the classroom! And for that matter, so is simply being a kid – hanging out with friends or doing nothing at all. Downtime to explore, to think, to play and use their imaginations.
When summer is only eight weeks, does that even make it worthwhile for employers to train and put a kid on the payroll? I can’t imagine. But if so, does that give the kid who takes a summer job a chance to do anything other than work?
I can remember summers that lasted a full three months – Memorial Day to Labor Day. And I feel bad for the kids today who are cheated out of a full month of summer. Such a shame. Though it means I’m facing an empty nest, I am soooo glad that I escaped dealing with such a ridiculous date this year.
