I spent a little time working on a contemporary romance today, and it got me thinking about some of my favorite character couples, and what makes them stick in my mind. I have two all-time favorite couples. They are Matt and Meredith, and Ben and Willa. Just for fun, can anyone name the books these leading couples appear in? (They've been around a while.)
What makes me remember them? Why do I like these people who don't really exist?
Well, I'm sure there are lots of factors, but I think what really makes a difference is that the authors spend a lot of time letting us get to know the characters, not just who they are at the time the story takes place and they fall in love, but how they developed into the people they are. What their home life and childhood were like. What hardships they faced growing up. What were their hopes and dreams for their lives. What life and world events shaped them. These things make them real. It's what we can identify with -- whether it's an embarrassing moment or the death of a parent or the loss of a dream.
What draws you to a character? I'd love to hear some thoughts and opinions. Who are the characters you love the most, and what makes them special? Are there certain personality types that resonate more than others?
I'm hopeful that someday you'll add Matt and Kate and Tom and Megan, and others still being formed on the pages I'm writing, to your list. But for now, as a reader of romance, feel free to share which characters have claimed a soft spot in your heart!
